Teaching

For the past several years, I have been teaching college courses and community workshops on video and other digital media production, film analysis and video art history, and multiculturalism in media.

My teaching history includes courses in two main areas:  media production and film studies.  Within media production, I have taught all levels of video and sound production in fine art contexts and in community workshops.  In addition, I have taught basic digital media skills through introductory courses that covered digital animation, digital photography, web design, and publication design.  My film studies teaching experience includes introduction to film analysis, experimental film and video art history, and upper-level courses that focus on multiculturalism and media.  My approach to teaching has been heavily influenced by the work of Paulo Freire and bell hooks, two thinkers who based their philosophies of education on the conviction that every human being is capable of looking critically at his or her world.  By teaching students to engage critically with media texts and cultural objects, I strive to create environments where students recognize the power and knowledge they already possess.  I encourage students to practice inquiry-based media literacy, questioning the media that surround them while also developing skills that will increase their ability to produce their own media.
